The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is a historical, educational and patriotic, lineage-based service organization that seeks to maintain the institutions of American freedom, an appreciation for true patriotism, a respect for our national symbols and the value of American citizenship. We do this by perpetuating the stories of patriotism, courage, sacrifice, tragedy, and triumph of the men who achieved American independence during the Revolutionary War.

The Captain William Barron Chapter service projects include the Rumbaugh Oration Contest for high school students, the Eagle Scout Essay Contest, the American History Teacher Award and the ROTC, Heroism and Law Enforcement Awards. A patriotic poster contest is held for elementary school children. The chapter participates in Naturalization Ceremonies, conducts the Tyler Flag Retirement Ceremony, presents patriotic programs to middle, high school and college students, participates in Revolutionary War grave markings. The SAR Color Guard presents the colors at numerous public events throughout East Texas.

Any man who can prove direct lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution is eligible for membership
