The purpose of the organization is to provide a forum for its members to present and participate in the interchange of ideas and of opinions upon subjects of interest; to show a united front for the welfare of retired persons with special emphasis on promoting passage of legislation of benefit to Retired Teachers and School personnel, educational advancement and continuous cultural growth; and to alert membership to their civic and community responsibility. The organization collects books for the Books for Children Program. Each year, a selective grade and school from Smith County is chosen for a book to be distributed to each child in that grade.
